U.S. Tariffs on Books Made in China

  • As of today, February 4, 2025, under the latest U.S. Presidential executive orders, not only have 10% in additional tariffs been placed on all goods made in China, the Section 321 de minimis exemption (shipments under $800 USD) has also been terminated for goods with a country of origin of China. This means that in addition to the 10% blanket tariff which has been placed on all goods originating from China today, now packages with a value of under $800 will no longer avoid the pre-existing tariffs. The combination of these tariffs means that books made in China could see tariffs of up to 30%.

Effective immediately, all our products made in China destined to the United States will have a 30% tariff fee automatically added to their regular price. There will be no hidden Chinese tariff fees at checkout. The regular price will remain unchanged for all other countries. Out of our 350+ products and variants, only 15 products are made in China. Our 30% tariff fee for goods made in China destined to the U.S.A. is subject to change. This is a vague estimate given by our freight company at this time. From our preliminary calculations, the overall tariffs on books may vary from 10%-17.5%, but there may also be associated broker fees with clearing goods made in China. We will adjust our tariff fee as new information is made available to us. Here are some pre-existing tariffs on books already in place for shipments over $800, that now also apply to shipments of all values.

    • The US tariff on dictionaries is (4901910020) is 0% + 7.5%.
    • Textbooks (4901990010) are subject to 0% + 7.5% tariff.
    • The US tariff on encyclopaedias (4901910040) is 0% + 7.5%.
    • Technical, scientific and professional books (4901990050) are subject to 0% + 7.5% tariff.
    • The US tariff on children’s picture, drawing or coloring books (4903000000) is 0%.

We believe most of our books would not meet the pre-existing tariff criteria above, but are most likely still subject to the 10% blanket tariffs implemented today. This thread will be updated with new information as it is made available to us.

  • Update: The U.S. Government has temporarily reinstated the Section 321 de minimis exemption for products made in China. Our U.S. prices for books made in China have reverted to their original price. This thread will be continued to be updated with any new developments.

  • May 3rd, 2025 Update: The U.S. Government has now removed the Section 321 de minimis exemption for products made in China. We have decided to prepay the U.S. tariffs on all packages with Chinese goods (included in the price). The price you pay at checkout is the final price. No surprises.

This thread will be updated with any new developments.
